A week later and a hundred miles away, Li's English teacher showed up with the promised painting. He had undertaken the major expense and sleuthing job needed to find us, and make the delivery. We were overwhelmed
Une semaine plus tard et quelques centaines de kilomètres plus loin, nous vîmes arriver le maître d’école. Ce dernier avait demandé un congé et avait fait le voyage à ses frais pour nous remettre le dessin promis. Nous étions au comble de la joie.
Somewhere during all this, we found out that Li, though immensely talented visually, had been severely hard of hearing since he was five years old. At the age of five when he was sick with high fever, the doctor gave him an anti-biotic GENTAMYCIN that damaged his hearing nerve and he became deaf. An audiologist among us urged that Li's hearing should at least be tested.
Nous apprîmes que Li, qui avait un immense talent visuel, était un handicapé auditif depuis une dizaine d’années. En effet à l’âge de cinq ans, Li était devenu sourd après avoir pris un antibiotique que lui avait prescrit le médecin pour le guérir d’une forte fièvre. Le GENTAMYCIN avait endommagé les nerfs auditifs. Une audiologiste qui faisait partie de notre groupe insista pour que Li subisse au moins un examen de l'ouïe.
It was agreed. We would try to help. The first long-distance phone calls met a dead end. There were no testing facilities in the area. We said, 'Take him to Beijing!'.
On accepta. Nous offrîmes notre collaboration. Les premiers appels interurbains ne donnèrent aucun résultat. Il n’existait aucun service du genre dans la région.. Nous répliquâmes alors :
" Amenez-le à Beijing! "
