On the second day in China, we were hiking through the countryside. We stopped, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, to admire an imposing memorial arch. Our curiosity attracted attention, and soon we were inviting ourselves to visit the local village school. Permission was given by the village cadre; we were greeted by the gentle and learned headmaster and given a grand tour.

Au cours de notre deuxième journée en Chine, nous marchions à travers la campagne, lorsque nous décidâmes de nous arrêter dans un petit coin perdu, pour admirer une imposante arche commémorative. Notre curiosité attira l’attention et, on nous invita à nous rendre à l’école du village. Après avoir obtenu la permission du chef du village, nous fûmes accueillis par un maître d’école aimable et cultivé qui nous fit visiter les lieux.

That was when we met Li, a fifteen-year-old student and talented artist. His paintings, in the traditional Chinese brush style, were pasted on the wall at the front of the classroom. This picture shows that Li, standing below his paintings, was modest and taciturn as we photographed him. Then, one of us boldly asked for one of his paintings. The teacher tried to take it off the wall with a proffered penknife, but unfortunately it would not come. It was then arranged that Li would paint another picture, and it would be sent to us. Because he so quiet, we were unaware of his disability.

C’est ainsi que nous fîmes la connaissance de Li, un étudiant âgé de 15 ans et un artiste de talent. Ses peintures, de style traditionnel, étaient collées au mur, en avant de la classe. Sur la photo, on aperçoit Li, debout sous ses tableaux, modeste et taciturne. L’un d’entre nous eut l’audace de lui demander un de ses dessins. Le maître d’école essaya de décoller le dessin à l’aide d’un couteau qu’on lui avait prêté, mais sans succès. Il fut donc convenu que Li ferait un autre tableau et qu’on nous le ferait parvenir. Il était tellement silencieux que nous ne remarquâmes pas son handicap.
